Summary: What happens when Jareds once stable but cold ex-husband goes over the edge? How does Jensen prevent him from destroying the man he loves? What do you do when your actions help a warped man put Jared away for a long time?

Jensen sat in the study of his parents house in Dallas, he was surrounded by Chris, Steve and his Mom and Dad. He had pretty much taken up residence here since Jareds trial had begun three weeks before. He snorted to himself as he took another sip of the shot in his hand, this was his third maybe fourth shot since he had come back from the courtroom and the debacle of a verdict, trial his ass. Jareds fate had been pretty much known the day they had seen Mark take that stand and lie. God he would never forgive himself for practically handing Jared to Mark on a platter the day he had lost it and hit that son of a bitch, and he knew Chris was beating himself up pretty badly too. Jared had known, the day he had returned from that fundraising trip and Jensen and the guys had told him what had gone down, and how Jensen had lost it and hit him, the look of Jareds face, he had known it would come back to haunt them, but he had covered it well and they had pretty much forgotten the incident until Mark had produced photos of the abuse he had suffered at Jareds hands.

He glanced over at Chris, who was just pouring his first drink, he had just returned from spending the last few hours with Jareds folks, they had actually been staying here throughout the trial too, his parents house here was certainly large enough, but tonight they had insisted on heading back home. They needed to be in San Antonio they said, it was where they needed to be right now, Sherri was distraught and Jensen knew she would be spending her days now curled in Jareds bedroom, trying to come to terms with what Mark had done to her baby boy.

‘’ They get off alright?’’ Alan Ackles asked Chris, Alan Ackles was a good man, and he was a pretty damn good judge of character, and he had taken to Jared Padalecki and his family within minutes of meeting them for the first time. Jared with his easy smile and his grace and his open and honest, beautiful face.

‘’Yeah’’ Chris sighed heavily as he sank into an easy chair and took a drink from the glass. ‘’They are just... I dunno...I just feel so damn helpless! Jared is in there and he didn’t ask for any of this...’’

He raised a tortured face to Jensen who looked on with tears in his eyes knowing, just knowing Chris was thinking the same thing he was, they had handed Jared over on a fucking plate. ‘’What are we going to do Jen? ‘’

‘’I don’t know Chris...I don’t fucking know...’’

Alan Ackles cleared his throat and spoke slowly

‘’It’s time guys, to bring in someone new’’

As all heads turned in his direction he continued;

‘’We all know Mark Peters lied, hell we know he probably got to that kid and paid him off, he is a very powerful man, with powerful connections, I uh... I took the liberty of asking a friend of mine to look things over, to investigate Mark, and find out as much as he can about what maybe Mark stands to gain...’’

Chris snorted ‘’We don’t need no investigator Alan to tell us what Mark stands to gain, he just wants to hurt Jared, he never planned on leaving him alone, he will never leave him alone’’

Alan stood and went to the door of the study and beckoned to someone who had obviously been waiting outside. A tall man entered the room and greeted them in a gruff voice.

Alan introduced him; ‘’this is Jeff Morgan, he works for my lawyer and is a damned good investigator, I just think now we have got to forget conventional and try beating this man at his own game, lets just hear what he has to say ok?’’ he ended pleadingly as Jensen made to object. Jensen sighed and sat back in the chair, rubbing his face with his hands in a desperate attempt to control frantically raging emotions.

Jeff Morgan moved to stand before them and cleared his throat ‘’Since the verdict came down today, I’ve been talking to a few people and I think before anything else is discussed, you all should know one or two things.’’ When he was talking he looked directly to Jensen, and Jensen felt his stomach roll, he just knew this wasn’t going to be good.

‘’I have no proof of this but the judge over the trial was being paid off by Peters’’ he held his hand up to silence Chris’ swearing, ‘’Please,you have got to listen carefully to me now, this is important’’

‘’What is it Jeff?’’ Alan asked with a frown and the tone of urgency in Morgans voice.

‘’It’s just, my contacts in the judges office, they have told me that Peters is pushing for the Judge to send Jared to Bridgman’s prison , and I don’t need to tell you how bad it is in there, it is notorious, and jam packed full of the worst kind of criminals and if someone like Jared goes in there, the chances are strong .... he won’t come out in one piece. I’m sorry.’’

Chris rose and started pacing, anxiously running his hands through his hair muttering ‘’Shit shit shit shit...’’ in a constant stream, Jensen finally rose from the seat and walking up to Chris placed his hands firmly on his shoulders and said ‘’Chris, I need you to pull it together man, Jared needs you, I cant...I can’t do this without you’’

Chris took a deep breath and nodded shakily and turned to Jeff Morgan;

‘’Why? Why send Jared there damnit? Isnt it enough that he has done this? God why punish him further?’’

Jeff looked at Chris with some sympathy, Alan Ackles had filled him in on the whole story a week ago, and he knew that both Jensen and Chris were eaten alive with guilt that Mark had taken their actions and used them to damn Jared to hell, literally. He knew now the kind of man they were dealing with here, and he wasn’t gonna be easy to bring down.

‘’My sources tell me that Peters behaviour has become more and more erratic lately, like he is heading for some sort of mental breakdown, he has never come right out and admitted to anyone that he has had any part in whats happened with Jared, but, I’ve done a little digging and it seems shortly after Jared left, his business ran into some trouble, it’s all to do with this economic crisis we got going on, but, seems Peters has become convinced Jared had a hand in it, like he somehow damaged the business by not being with Mark. Peters is of the mind now that if he can get Jared back everything will fall back into place for him and all will be well in his circle, but when Jared kept refusing it may have been the last straw, he has been heard muttering... he wants Jared punished, and in the worst ways possible, he thinks that....he thinks that Jensen has given Jared a backbone, and this bone needs to be broken, he is going to try and sever the tie that holds you two together, he wants Jared broken. I’m also told that the judge is going to send Jared to that prison on a maximum sentence, chances are looking high that he will send Jared down for ten years’’

‘’Jesus Christ’’ Jensen flopped into a chair and stared unseeingly at Jeff, ‘’ten years?’’

He couldn’t let this happen, he couldn’t.... Jared must be terrified....

‘’Dad, we have got to do something ... ten years? Jesus he was arrested four fucking months ago! He has already been gone four months Dad!’’

Alan Ackles heart broke for his son at that moment, and god if he could have taken Jareds place and end the torment they were both going through he would have done it.

‘’Son, we will sort it out, Jeff is with us on this now and we will sort this out. Jeff, how long do we have before Jared is sentenced and moved?’’

‘’Well the sentencing was set for two weeks from today, so thats as long as we have I’m afraid’’

Two weeks... it had already been four months and they hadn’t been able to shake or break the case they had built on Jared, what the fuck were they going to achieve in two weeks?
