Authors note,: This is completely un-betaed , all mistakes are my own stupid fault! Also just to tell you guys that this fic was inspired by a song, Martina MacBride: Satin Sheets.
Also this chapter completely wiped me out for some reason.. and I cried like a baby the whole time I was typing it... embarrassing.
‘’But...how?’’
Jensen was confused and maybe his brain wasn’t functioning right, maybe the dust had affected him more than he realised, in which case he really needed a good cleaning day...But according to this article, Jared was now living in his home town, and that couldn’t be right. He had gone back to Mark; he had left Jensen and gone back to Mark... so why was he living back in his home town?
‘’Chris? What’s going on?’’ He raised his head to look at Chris ‘’Why is he living in San Antonio now? They haven’t moved there have they? I don’t understand... is it a misprint?’’
Chris took another long swig to steady his nerves and praying he had done the right thing in betraying Jareds trust, he told Jensen everything.
He told him about finding the newspaper thrown on the bar in a small town in Texas where he was gigging; his shock at finding out Jared was back in San Antonio, about his drive to Jareds house, how he had spent the drive getting angrier and angrier at Jared for not calling him, knowing something was wrong. He told him about how before he even got to Jared that day he had been met with his tearful sister, begging him not to make Jared cry anymore, and his protective mother, and he told him about his conversation with Jared.
Jensen felt sicker and sicker with each word that Chris spoke, he listened silently as Chris told him how Mark had known all along about Jared and Jensen, how Mark had said that he had always had Jared followed. How Mark had told Jared to his face, that he never wanted things to work out, it had all been an act of revenge, all perfectly acted out to make Jensen hate him and Chris angry enough to threaten him, how Mark had used Jensens words to his own advantage and thrown him out with nothing knowing that Jared couldn’t turn to the two men he had needed the most.
He told him of Marks parting shot to Jared, telling him cruelly that he wasn’t the only ass he had fucked in their time together, at which Jensen paled, remembering his own parting words to Jared. Chris went on to say that Jared had went through some testing when he got home and had come back clear, but that wasn’t surprising knowing how meticulous Mark was.
He listened, feeling weak as Chris went on to tell him he had spent the last three days with Jared and his family, had listened to the stories they had told him when Jared was at work. How Jareds mom had sat for hours that morning tearfully telling Chris how she had never seen anything or anyone as broken as Jared had been when he had arrived at the house late one night. How he had spent the better part of six weeks just trying to pull himself together, hating himself for what he had done to Jensen, and missing Chris like a limb but not being able to contact him for fear that Chris would attack Mark and get himself arrested for attempted murder.
She had told him how glad she was that Chris was back in his life, how Jared needed him so badly, how Jared still obviously loved his Jensen, but would not forgive himself enough to go talk to him. She told him how angry Jared had become when he had discovered that Mark had put all that money in his account, how he had immediately taken every cent and donated it to the after schools programme and then promptly closed that account and opened another where Mark could not interfere again. She had gone on to say how Jared was so strong now, how he smiled again, the light still not back in his eyes but she had seen a glimpse of it around Chris, how he was now moving this week to his own place just outside of town, and had even got himself a new bike. Nothing as fancy as what he had had, but all his own. How fiercely independent he had become, refusing any offer of a cent from anyone, insisting that he could cope on his own.
She had told him of the damage Mark had done to Jareds personality, how, where before Jared had always been such an open giving person who naturally drew people to him there now was a sense of distrust when he met new people, how he threw everything he had into this programme and his teaching and that was the only time she saw the old Jared. But everywhere else, in every other situation she could see Jared close himself off.
She also told him of the nights in those early days and still some nights now, that she listened helplessly outside Jareds bedroom door as he sobbed into his pillow, thinking he was unheard, how many a night she had to stuff a fist into her mouth to stop from sobbing out loud with him. She spoke of her anger and guilt at not having done something sooner, how as his mother she should have known it was so bad. He told Jensen how he had comforted her as she had finally let all her emotions out and cried into his shoulder for her beautiful son, whose only sin had been to love too much and too honestly.
By the time Chris finished talking, it had been a couple of hours and neither man had noticed how Mike had arrived and had just worked silently; not wanting to disturb what he had known by their faces was a serious conversation. It was Chris clearing his throat huskily that drew Jensens attention to him, and he broke out of his stunned silence to realise with shock that Chris had tears on his face, and his own face mirrored those tears.
He didn’t know what to say, he couldn’t think, Jared... what he had gone through, how alone he must have felt and knowing Jared the pain he must have gone through knowing he had hurt Jensen for nothing. Jensen knew the last four months hadn’t been easy on him, but Jesus, what had it been like for Jared?
Chris shifted in his seat to reach into his pocket and pulled out a silver chain and handed it to Jensen saying ‘’ She also gave me this, she said up till three weeks ago Jared wore it constantly, that he would often sit for hours staring out the window clutching it in his hand, she said that maybe when you saw this, you would know...you would know how much you mean to him’’
The tears poured and blinded Jensen as he sat and stared at the chain now in his hands, for there, hung on that chain, glinting up at him in the light of the Bar...
Was his silver ring.
