It was pushing eight pm, and Jensen was just waiting for mike to arrive to take over the bar for a few hours, so he could take a well earned break upstairs. It wasn’t like he had anything major to do, but he knew he had to just get out of the place for an hour or two. The bar was quiet, it being Tuesday, so while he waited he busied himself dusting off some shelves under the bar. At the sound of the door opening and banging shut, he called out to Mike without raising his head from where he was.

‘’Hey Mike... bout time you got here man, it’s fairly quiet here tonight so I doubt you will be under any pressure, but just yell if you need me, otherwise I will be down to help you clean up’’

A soft clearing of a throat sounded very close to his head and Jensen raised his head cautiously over the bar, to be greeted by a pair of gold flecked hazel eyes and a shy grin.

‘’Hey Jensen, sorry to just drop in on you guys like this, but I got the chance to get away and I thought maybe it would be alright to drop by and see Chris for a day or two... that is.... if it’s ok with you?’’

Jensen finally found his voice again and stood up and blurted ‘’Chris isn’t here Jay, he went out of town ‘til the end of the week at least, a gig he couldn’t refuse.’’

‘’Oh, damn, I knew I should have called first, I uuuuhhh ,I’m sorry to have burst in on you like this, look, maybe I could just grab a coffee somewhere and I will head out.... ‘’

At Jensens silence, Jared cleared his throat and said softly ‘’ See you some other time Jensen’’ and made for the door.

Jared actually had his hand on the handle before Jensen mentally kicked himself and called out .

‘’Wait! Jared wait... I’m sorry man, you just surprised me thats all, Jeez don’t go, you must be tired from that long drive, stay, have some coffee with me, please?’’

Mike chose that minute to come in and burst in the door all smiles and apologies.

‘’Hey boss, sorry I’m late, traffics a bitch!’’

Without taking his eyes off of Jareds face, Jensen replied, ‘’There is no traffic Mike, this isn’t L.A.’’

‘’So there isn’t’’ Mike grinned unashamedly ‘’so is there anything in particular you need doing boss?’’

Jensen turned finally to look at Mike and replied ‘’No, it’s quiet Mike, I will be upstairs if you need me, just yell ok?’’

‘’Ok, sure thing ‘’ And Mike threw his jacket under the counter and set about finishing the shelves Jensen had started.

Jensen looked to Jared again, who hadn’t moved from the spot next to the door ‘’Come on, lets go get some coffee and a bite to eat ok?’’

Jared nodded silently and followed Jensen through the back and up the stairs that held Jensens apartment. He placed his overnight bag inside the door and followed Jensen through to the kitchen, and sat down at the counter and watched as Jensen busied himself preparing some coffee.

‘’So you want a sandwich Jared? I’m starving, been too busy all afternoon to eat.’’

‘’Yeah, yeah sure thanks...here let me help’’ Jared replied getting up and grabbing a couple mugs for the coffee and Jensen set about preparing a plate of sandwiches, and in no time they were planted on the couch in the living room eating  and polishing off the coffee.

Jared turned on the couch to face Jensen one leg underneath him and one on the floor, arm thrown across the back of the couch, inches from Jensens shoulder.

‘’I’m really sorry to have just dropped in like this, I should have known better than to just arrive, I really should have called first.’’

Jensen regarded him for a moment before answering with a genuine smile ‘’Hey thats no problem, I’ve already told you that, and you have to stay ok? Chris is away for the week and you even get his bed!’’

Jared ducked his head and smiled, ran his hand through his already messy hair before he looked up again and answered ‘’Ok, ok I can do one night at least yeah? We will see if you’re so eager tomorrow for me to stay any longer.’’

‘’Good!’’ Jensen exclaimed ‘’I’m glad thats sorted! Now how bout a beer huh?’’

Jareds smiled and nodded ‘’Sure, Why not!’’ As he made to rise, Jensen stopped him with a hand to his shoulder.

‘’No, you stay there, I can manage, you have got to be wrecked from that drive, I will be right back.’’

Jared settled back against the cushions and closed his eyes for a moment and just let the silence and calm of the quiet apartment lull him, and thats how Jensen found him five minutes later, he just stood at the door and watched as Jared visibly relaxed as he lay with his head back against the back of the couch, the lines of tension on his face disappearing and the shadows easing.

He stepped further into the room and cleared his throat softly, Jared turned his head in his direction and opened tired eyes, and smiled softly.

‘’You sure you want a beer? Maybe you should just go crash Jared’’

‘’No, no I’m alright, honestly’’

Jensen sat down again on the couch and sat facing Jared, as Jared never moved, merely moved his head in his direction.

‘’So... what brought you here anyway Jay? Not that I’m not glad to see you, I am, I just didn’t think you would be back so soon.’’

Jared sat up and took a large drink from the beer bottle licking his lips when some spilt and looked over to see Jensens eyes glued to his lips.

‘’Uh... I dunno, Mark is away till Saturday and Lucy was gonna strangle me if I didn’t get out from under her feet, so I thought I may as well head on down...I really am sorry I never rang ahead Jensen, I am probably ruining whatever plans you had.’’

‘’I’ve already told you, it’s ok, and no I had no plans, actually I’ve kinda gotten used to the company so it was kinda lonely without Chris, so the company will be good...’’

They sat in silence for a few more minutes before Jared broke it again ‘’so ... Dallas huh?’’

‘’Uh huh, Dallas man’’ He replied with a grin and before long they were engrossed in a conversation on football and which teams were better and laughing as they ribbed each other on their lack of taste.

‘’What brought you all the way out here then Jen?’’

Jensen grinned at the use of his nickname on Jareds lips and replied honestly .

‘’It was time for a change Jay, after the breakup with Steve, it just seemed like the right move to make, and I’m not sorry either’’

‘’Was it bad? The break up I mean?’’ Jared asked as he sat facing Jensen, once again with his leg  tucked under him, but his arm under his chin this time.

‘’It was hard’’ Jensen replied ‘’Breaking up is never easy, and it was nothing dramatic, He didn’t cheat on me or leave me for someone else, we were together a long time, three years, and we just... I dunno....it just fizzled out I guess , and we are still friends, I mean he will always  be my best friend , an you will probably get to meet him, Him and Chris often play the odd gig together and he has promised he will come down for a visit. He has someone new now, and I’m glad for him.’’

‘’You’re amazing you know that?’’ Jared whispered and it was Jensens turn to blush an he chuckled ‘’No, no I’m just practical Jay, sometimes, as hard as it is you just got to face the truth and move on, and it wasn’t easy on either of us, and we spent a long time and a lot of tearful phonecalls back and forth, not sure if we were doing the right thing, but, it got better and we were just killing what friendship we had trying to hold on to something that was gone, and we are better friends for it.’’

‘’Doesnt it scare you though?’’

‘’Scare me? How?’’

‘’I dunno, going back to being alone, afraid you wont ever find someone, just someone who loves you... aren’t you afraid of being alone?’’

‘’Jay, of course I get scared sometimes, everyone does man, but it has been good for the last six plus months, just being me again, I miss him sometimes, but I got to know me again and thats always a good thing.’’

At this point Jensen decided the conversation had gotten deep enough for one night and gently steered the conversation away from his break up ad onto something else ‘’So, tell me about San Antonio, besides the shit teams you follow ‘’ he grinned.

The following coupe of hours flew by as the two men sat, nursing the same beers, and talked about home and childhood ad how they were still so close to their families, how Jensen had been down to see them twice since moving six months ago and how Jared didn’t get the chance to travel to see them all that much but they still talked on the phone all the time.

They talked about how much easier coming out had been with the love and support of their families, how Jareds Mom was a teacher and thats why Jared had always wanted to teach, he talked about how he just loved the idea of passing on knowledge and love of learning to someone else, and Jensen spoke of how his  family were in the restaurant business, owning  three or four restaurants in the Dallas area, and that was where he got the head for the business and bought the bar.

They were both startled when the phone rang some three hours later, and Mike was asking Jensen would he go ahead and close up as it was still so quiet, Jensen apologised to Mike and said he would be right down.

‘’God where did the time go?’’ He said grinning at Jared and thoroughly enjoying the relaxed air about them now. ‘’I better go down and help Mike close up, god only knows what he will do if left to himself!’’

‘’Let me help Jen, please?’’

Jensen nodded easily ‘’Sure! Come on, we can let Mike head home and lock up ourselves...’’

Ten minutes later saw Jensen lock the door behind Mike and turn to face Jared who was wiping down the bar and loading the few glasses into the dishwasher. He leaned against the door and watched for a few minutes as Jared worked completely unaware he was being observed. God, Jensen could not believe the change in the demeanour of the man that worked here now getting the place cleared to the tense man that had arrived earlier that evening.

Jensen had no idea who or what Mark was or did, and he knew Chris didn’t have much to say on the man, but, just judging by Jared himself, he really longed to punch some sense into the man. Had he any idea of the gem he had? Was he aware of how desperately unhappy Jared was? Did he even know that Jared was here, in the company of another man, and enjoying himself? At that moment, Jensen decided, if the opportunity arose and Jared welcomed it, he was going to kiss this man, and he was going to show him what he could have, if he wanted it badly enough. Jared just had to get up the courage and strength to try, because as Jensen watched Jared across the bar, he realised his stupid heart had done it again...

Jensen had fallen in love...
