I will post a chapter a week, that I promise.
Jensen’s first morning in the cabin dawned bright, warm, and beautiful. He stretched leisurely in the oversized bed, and watched the sun peek through the cracks in the curtains. He lay, letting the night’s sleep and the exhaustion he had felt slip away with the knowledge that there was nothing he had to do. No where he needed to be, and no one he had to pander to.
Much later Jensen stood in the shower, the hot water washed over him as he contemplated the sounds he'd heard the night before that had sounded so much like sobs. He grinned. The locals were better storytellers than he had given them credit for; they had certainly lodged the idea of a ghost in his mind. His smile didn’t fade as he shook the water out of his face and reached for the towel. Maybe he would go back to that store and congratulate them on their convincing performance.
It was the memory of his grandmother that had brought him back to reality. Her name had been June, Nana June he had called her, and she had sworn she talked to spirits. She’d taken him aside one day and told him he could talk to them too, she could tell. Jensen had been very young and was wide eyed with terror at the thought of a bunch of ghosts following him around. It had taken his Mom months to convince him that his Nana was a crazy old lady and he shouldn’t listen to a word she said.
He wasn’t allowed to spend much time with her after that and she died a few months later. He had grown up not believing anything she’d told him, His stint in Hollywood had been enough to kill any lingering doubts. If he had any; he didn’t, none, not at all. Clean and dry he sat in the small brightly lit kitchen and sipped at his first coffee of the day wondering what he should do first. He had no appointments, no pressure, nothing to think about and he loved it.
Jensen spent his day doing....absolutely nothing. He was sure he looked like a complete lunatic wandering around the cosy cabin again, exploring and smiling to himself the whole time. He found little hideaways he hadn’t seen the night before, he opened all the windows and let the fresh breeze blow in from the lake. Satisfied he’d seen everything; he pulled out his camera and wandered outside.
Photography was a private passion of his. It was one of the first things he had splurged on when he had some money to his name was a very expensive, but damn good, professional camera. All morning he explored the trees and the overgrown yard, snapping pictures of whatever caught his eye. They were all simple things, a bird flying low overhead, a butterfly flitting from flower to flower, and a particularly beautiful spot between two trees. He imagined himself stretched out on the glorious patch of grass hidden there watching the trees sway above him.
He wandered down to the lake and spent hours, sitting on some rocks letting the water lap at his feet as he gazed out over the still water. He watched the people going about their own lives far up the shore. He spent those hours with his camera resting on his knees, snapping pictures randomly and knowing that the results would be glorious.
He sipped enough coffee throughout the day to keep him awake for a week and revelled in the fact that there was no cell reception where the cabin was situated. If he wanted to talk to anyone he would have to have to walk out from under the trees, and he had absolutely no intention of doing that.
As the afternoon wore on, Jensen went back to the cabin, and settled into a comfortable chair on the porch. With a hat pulled down over a face already adorned in large sunglasses, he stretched out and dozed, a cool bottle of beer on the table beside him.
**********
“I’m promised to her....”
“You love me!”
“It’s not right.....they will kill us....”
“We will go away...somewhere no one knows us, we can be alone...”
“I’m scared Bill...”
The tall muscular man moved closer and gently laid a hand on the shaggy haired young man’s beautiful face. He ran his fingers across a high forehead down over slanted gold flecked eyes and settled on his cheek, rubbing his thumb lightly across the high cheekbone. The oil lamps glowed softly, painting dancing shadows on rough log walls. The rough clothing they wore was a stark contrast to the gentleness between them. The flannel shirts and canvas pants seemed out of place in a moment of such tenderness
“Jared, it will be ok, I love you, we will be ok I promise.”
When the younger man nodded, Bill leaned in and softly kissed his mouth, nothing sexual, just tenderness and love and reassurance.
“Ok.....let’s do it.....let’s leave, just me and you, we will be ok, yeah?”
“Yeah, we will be ok; didn’t I make you a promise? You know I always keep my promises don’t ya?”
Jared smiled softly, “I love you Bill, so very much.”
The soft reassuring kisses became more, much more, and soon the two men were without their shirts, and stretched out on the straw, amongst the horses at the back of the barn. They were lost in each other and didn’t hear anyone approaching until it was too late.
The intruders were on them before the pair could react, Bill was held fast by three men, and no matter how he fought he couldn’t get free, couldn’t get to Jared. He screamed himself hoarse, cursing the other five men who attacked Jared ruthlessly. Two held him down while the three others took turns beating him with sticks and kicking him with booted feet. One of them was screaming obscenities about Jared leading his sister on, and teaching him a lesson, and how they were going to make sure he never touched another woman.
The last thing Bill heard as he lost consciousness from a blow to the head was a woman’s scream, and as he lost the battle to stay awake, all he saw was blood.......
Jared’s blood.
Jensen sat up, sweat pouring down his face and his heart racing....he could still feel the panic, the terror, see that guy...Jared...Jared’s body being beaten to a pulp.......
He rubbed a hand down his face shaken, and reached for the now warm beer. Seriously what the fuck?
Ok, no more sun for him, Jesus!
Blinking against the setting sun, and rubbing the sleep from his eyes, Jensen stumbled inside to fix a light meal and cold drink. He thought about his dream as he picked at his dinner, and he wondered why he was dreaming about two men in the old west. It had been so vivid, and felt so real; he could still hear the Irish lilt of Bill’s accent and feel the big Irishman’s terror as he watched his love being beaten. He could feel Jared’s mind withdrawing as the men attempted to beat him to death.
Jensen tried to stop thinking about it; he didn’t want to keep feeling the pain of the dream. No matter how he tried to think about something else, anything else, his mind kept returning to the young man’s beautiful face. Jensen couldn’t help thinking about how Jared’s hair had hung past his shoulders and a light beard had adorned a face that could have been a carving.
The Irishman’s features were ruggedly handsome, sky blue eyes that Jensen was sure had sparkled when he laughed. He had a strong jaw partially obscured by strawberry blonde hair that hung well past his broad shoulders. Jensen felt the man had loved Jared with a passion; a protectiveness that was etched forever on their souls. He had no idea why he was dreaming about these men, or what the dreams meant. How real they seemed was disturbing, he thought he needed a break more than he had realised.
Realising he had been thinking about his weird dream for far too long, Jensen went back out to the porch to enjoy the cool night air. Leaning back in the chair with nothing but the night sounds and his camera for company, Jensen spent another hour just sitting there, watching the reflection of the lights on the lake. The shutter on his camera clicked again and again as he zoomed the lens in and out, snapping pictures of the boats that went by with their lights glowing; the people on board laughing and having fun. He took shots of the lights shining through the dark from the buildings on the other side of the lake, and the colours the lights cast across the lake. Feeling restless Jensen wandered around to the back of the cabin and snapped more pictures of the trees. The moonlight cast a perfect and beautiful glow between the two trees that stood out from the rest, the light gave them an eerie and yet strangely comforting feel.
It wasn’t until much later that night; actually in the early hours of the morning, that Jensen was startled awake. He sat up in bed, listening, wondering what had disturbed him. After a few minutes he decided that it was nothing more than the night sounds he wasn’t used to, but then he heard it again. Frowning and his heart racing he listened to the sounds of sobbing coming from outside the bedroom window.
“What the.....?”
Climbing out of bed, he pulled on a pair of sweatpants and grabbed a flashlight. Cautiously he crept out the front door of the cabin, and around to the side. As he neared the trees in the back, the light from the flashlight revealed a figure kneeling between the two trees that had captivated him earlier. Curious but not stupid, Jensen stayed back and called out,
“Hello?”
The man didn’t reply, just continued to sob, his arms wrapped around his middle as if in pain, his head bowed. Slowly, Jensen edged closer.
“Hey, you ok dude?”
There was no answer, and Jensen huffed an impatient sigh. He pointed the light directly at the man.
“Look,” He said, impatience coloring his tone. “Whatever it is I’m sure it can’t be that bad, right? It’s just.....look it’s late and I’m real tired and you’re keeping me awake so if you wouldn’t mind.....”
Finally the man stopped crying and Jensen waited, holding his breath without even realizing he had stopped breathing. A hitching breath escaped the man’s throat and Jensen lowered the light and casting him into shadow as the guy stood slowly, and reached out to tenderly lay the palm of one hand on one of the trees, whispering to himself.
“Hey.....you ok man? I can’t hear a word you are saying, you’re not making any sense....you want me to go call someone?” Jensen asked moving forward, his concern about the young man overcoming his common sense.
The man didn’t even acknowledge Jensen as he laid his forehead gently against the tree his hand was caressing, the moon the only light that fell on him and Jensen took another a step closer.
“Hey!”
A final sob escaped and then without ever looking in Jensen’s direction he turned and walked into the trees towards the lake that they surrounded. Jensen hesitated after the guy disappeared from view before cursing softly and following him.
But he was gone.
Jensen searched for a little while, walking as far as lake but there was no sign of the strange man. Finally giving up with a shrug, he returned to the house and fell into bed. He refused to put too much thought into the fact that it was the second night in a row that he had heard sobbing, and it was real.
